Biotec Pharmacon has noticed increased interest for the company’s beta-1,3/1,6-glucan products in recent years. This is certainly the result of the growing awareness within biomedical and clinical research societies that substances like beta-1,3/1,6-glucan, that modulate innate immune mechanisms, have notable potentials in infection prophylaxis and as immune modulating agents that adjust and counteract immune related disorders and diseases.
Besides a comprehensive scientific foundation, Biotec Pharmacon has years of experience and efficacy documentation with its proprietary beta-1,3/1,6-glucan products used in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine. The company has regarded this lead to be sufficiently strong to justify an ambitious pharmaceutical development program with its most promising drug candidate, soluble beta-1,3/1,6-glucan (SBG).
Biotec Pharmacon distributes consumer products both internationally and nationally under the trade-names NBG®, Immutol® and Immuderm®. The products have been available for several years in USA and Japan, where regulatory authorities permit functional claims in accordance with the company’s sound documentation that the products modulate innate immunity in a very positive manner. The company has also conducted a double-blind, placebo controlled clinical study with Immutol® to support its marketing and sales.
Biotec Pharmacon has previously developed a portfolio of beta-1,3/1,6-glucan products that for several years were marketed and sold by the company itself in the animal health markets world-wide. These products improve the general well-being, growth, feed-utilization and survival of fish and shrimp in aquaculture, livestock animals and pets. The experience of use and documentation of efficacy and safety on these products form a sound foundation for development of the company in pharmaceutical direction. The Animal Health division was divested from the company in 2008.
